Pada Januari 2004, Niue dilanda badai Cyclone Heta sengit tropis yang menewaskan dua orang dan menyebabkan kerusakan yang luas untuk seluruh pulau. Banyak bangunan yang hancur , termasuk rumah sakit. Gedung-gedung pemerintah yang bergeser ke situs yang kurang terkena 3 km dari pesisir barat, bernama Fonuakula, setelah badai. Situs ini masih dalam batas-batas desa Alofi Selatan.

== Iklim ==

Alofi memiliki iklim hutan hujan tropis di bawah klasifikasi iklim Köppen, tanpa musim kering . Kota ini memiliki hamparan terasa lebih kering dari Juni hingga September. Namun, semua bulan rata-rata lebih dari 60 mm hujan, batas selama satu bulan musim kemarau. Seperti kota-kota lain dengan iklim ini, suhu rata-rata tetap relatif konstan sepanjang tahun, pada 25 derajat Celcius.
