Sebelum menetapkan nama saat ini pada Juli 1983, band ini tampil dengan nama '''Sharp Young Men''' dan kemudian '''Faith No Man'''. Bassis [[Billy Gould]], kibordis/gitaris ritme [[Roddy Bottum]] dan drummer [[Mike Bordin]] adalah anggota band yang bertahan paling lama, yang telah terlibat sejak awal.
