Pada masa pecahnya Perang Dunia II di Pasifik, pulau [[Borneo]] terbaik dalam lima teritorial: empat di utara di bawah kekuasaan Inggris - [[Kerajaan Sarawak|Sarawak]], [[Brunei]], [[Koloni Mahkota Labuan|Labuan]] (pulau), dan [[Borneo Utara Britania]] (sekarang [[Sabah]]); dan sisa wilayah dari pulau tersebut di bagian selatan berada di bawah kekuasaan [[Hindia Belanda]] (sekarang [[Indonesia]]).
