IE Mobile  adalah browser default  di [[Windows Phone]] dan [[Windows CE]]. Versi terbaru dari Internet Explorer Mobile (sejak [[Windows Phone 8]]) didasarkan pada versi desktop Internet Explorer. Namun, versi yang lebih tua  yang bernama  Pocket Internet Explorer (ditemukan pada Windows Phone 7 dan [[Windows Mobile]]), tidak didasarkan pada layout engine  yang sama.

Internet Explorer Mobile 11 didasarkan pada versi desktop [[Internet Explorer 11]]  yang datang secara pre-install pada  [[Windows Phone 8.1]]. Browser baru, [[Microsoft Edge]] menggantikan Internet Explorer Mobile di [[Windows 10 Mobile]].

Versi terbaru dari Internet Explorer Mobile  memiliki tabbed browsing. Browser juga  mendukung [[Multi sentuh|gestur multisentuh]], termasuk  gestur "pinch untuk perbesar"  dan "tap untuk memperbesar", walaupun tidak  adanya [https://dvcs.w3.org/hg/webevents/raw-file/tip/touchevents.html Sentuh API] yang tersedia. [[Bing|Pencarian Bing]] terintegrasi dengan Internet Explorer Mobile dan juga dapat menampilkan situs-situs  dengan versi "mobile" dan "desktop" .

Pocket Internet Explorer 2.0, dirilis pada bulan September 1997 dengan Windows CE 2.0, menambahkan banyak fitur baru, yaitu: browsing offline, mengubah ukuran gambar agar sesuai dengan layar, dan  dukungan [[HTML]] yang lebih banyak, termasuk frameset dan tabel. PIE 3.0, yang diperkenalkan pada bulan juli 1998 dengan Windows CE 2.10, menambahkan dukungan untuk [[JScript]] dan berbagai protokol yang aman.

Pocket Internet Explorer 4  adalah versi pertama yang mendukung  [[Object Linking and Embedding|ActiveX]], [[Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]], [[VBScript]]  dan memperbesar  dukungan  HTTPS  dan fitur HTML yang lebih tinggi.  Versi PIE untuk PocketPC 2002  membawa dukungan terbatas untuk  [[Dynamic HTML|DHTML]] dan [[XML]],  dan juga menambahkan dukungan untuk menjelajahi situs  [[Wireless Application Protocol|WAP]] –  Sebuah fitur yang tidak ada untuk Internet Explorer versi desktop, Internet Explorer 6.0  menambahkan dukungan untuk  IFrames. Pada 15 Februari 2010, Microsoft  meluncurkan [[Sistem operasi telepon genggam|mobile operating system]]  generasi terbaru, Windows Phone yang datang dengan peramban versi terbaru  Internet Explorer Mobile. Pada  15 Juli 2014, [[Microsoft]] merilis [[Windows Phone 8.1]], yang meliputi Internet Explorer baru Mobile 11 browser. Versi ini akan lebih  mirip dengan  [[Internet Explorer 11|versi desktop]], dengan membawa lebih banyak perbaikan.

Selain itu, tombol untuk me-refresh halaman sekarang ditempatkan pada address bar, dan tab yang terbuka dapat ditampilkan pada Microsoft perangkat  lainnya selain di  smartphone  yang sedang  digunakan: jika pengguna login dengan akun Microsoft pada kedua Windows 8.1 perangkat dan perangkat Windows Phone, tab di Internet Explorer 11 akan melakukan sinkronisasi secara otomatis.

Microsoft membuat beberapa perubahan untuk Internet Explorer Mobile untuk membuat browser lebih kompatibel dengan situs yang dirancang untuk mobile [[Safari (peramban web)|Safari]] ([[iOS]]) dan [[Google Chrome|Chrome]] ([[Android (sistem operasi)|Android]]). Untuk mencapai hal ini, Microsoft mengadopsi fitur yang digunakan di Safari dan Chrome, mengemulasi  fitur WebKit, dan menyatakan  kepada web server bahwa itu adalah iOS atau Android yang kompatibel.
