Imam Baihaqi dilahirkan di Khasrujard, Baihaq, yaitu di Naysabur di Persia (sekarang provinsi Khorasan, [[Iran]]) pada tahun 994. Ia mempelajari [[hadist]] dan mendalami [[fiqh]] mazhab Syafi'i
== Pengajaran ==
Imam Baihaqi kemudian mengajar di Naysabur, dan menjadi orang pertama yang mengumpulkan naskah-naskah fiqh [[Imam Syafi'i]] dalam kitabnya ''Al-Mabsuth'', sekaligus menjadi penyebar fiqh mazhab Syafi'i. Imam al-Haramain al-Juwaini berkomentar tentang pemahaman Imam Baihaqi terhadap mazhab Syafi'i:
Sedangkan [[Imam adz-Dzahabi]] pernah berkata mengenai keluasan ilmunya, bahwa kalau Al-Baihaqi menghendaki, maka ia mampu membuat mazhab sendiri karena keluasan ilmu dan pemahamannya akan masalah-masalah khilafiyah.
