Tujuan misi ini adalah untuk menempatkan pendarat stasioner dilengkapi dengan seismometer dan penyelidikan aliran panas di permukaan Mars untuk mempelajari evolusi geologi awal. Hal ini akan membawa pemahaman baru tentang planet terestrial di tata surya - Merkurius, Venus, Bumi, Mars - dan Bulan Bumi.
