Kapal utama dari kelas ini, ROKS ''Chungmugong Yi Sunsin'', diluncurkan pada bulan Mei 2002 dan diresmikan pada bulan Desember 2003. Kapal perusak kelas  ''Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin ''adalah kelas kapal kedua yang diproduksi dalam program produksi massal kapal perusak Angkatan Laut Republik Korea,  yang bernama  Korean Destroyer eXperimental, Dengan program ini diharapkan AL Korea Selatan dapat menjadi  [[angkatan laut perairan biru]]. Enam kapal telah diluncurkan oleh  Hyundai Heavy Industries  dan  Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering dalam empat tahun.

Kapal ini memiliki  [[Sistem peluncuran vertikal|Mk&nbsp;41 VLS]]  berjumlah 32 sel untuk peluru kendali pertahanan udara areal  [[RIM-66 Standard|SM-2 Block IIIA]] , satu  [[RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile|RAM]]  peluncur peluru kendali pertahanan 21 rudal, satu senjata pertahanan jarak dekat 30&nbsp;mm [[Goalkeeper CIWS|Goalkeeper]] , satu meriam  Mk&nbsp;45 Mod&nbsp;4 127&nbsp;mm, delapan pelur kendali anti-kapal  Harpoon dan dua peluncur torpedo tiga tabung anti-kapal selam 324&nbsp;mm.
 
Perlengkapan elektronik termasuk satu radar jarak jauh 2D Raytheon [[AN/SPS-49]](V)5 (LRR), satu radar indikasi target 3D  [[Thales Nederland]] MW08  (TIR), dua radar pengendali tembakan Thales Nederland STIR240 [[Radar pengendali tembakan|f]]  dengan  pemancar OT-134A Continuous Wave Illumination (CWI), sebuah sistem pernika SLQ-200(V)K SONATA dan sebuah sistem manajeman tempur KDCOM-II yang merupakan turunan dari sistem manajemen tempur SSCS dari  fregat Type 23  milik Inggris. WDS Mk 14 buatan  [[BAE Systems]]  mulanya dikembangkan untuk program  New Threat Upgrade  AL Amerika Serikat untuk  mengukur ancaman, menilai prioritas, dan menembaknya dengan SM-2.
 
Pada unit keempat, ROKS ''Wang Geon'', Mk 41 VLS 32-cell dipindahkan ke bagian kiri  dan sebuah VLS buatan lokal  [[:ko:한국형 수직발사장치|K-VLS]] dipasang pada bagian kanan. Bagian depan kapal cukup luas untuk dipasangi Mk 41 VLS sejumlah 64 sel.
