Taylor lahir pada 11 Januari 1930<ref>''Sydney Morning Herald'', Birth Announcements, Saturday 18 January 1930, page 16</ref> di Lidcombe, pinggiran kota [[Sydney]], satu-satunya anak dari William Sturt Taylor, seorang kontraktor konstruksi baja dan seniman komersial, dan Mona Taylor ([[née]] Thompson), seorang penulis yang telah menulis lebih dari seratus cerita singkat dan buku anak-anak. Nama tengahnya berasal dari nama paman buyutnya, Kapten [[Charles Sturt]], seorang penjelajah Inggris yang menjelajah Australia pada abad ke-19.
Taylor belajar di Parramatta High School dan kemudian melanjutkan studinya di East Sydney Technical and Fine Arts College.
