RFE didirikan sebagai sumber berita anti-komunis pada tahun 1949 oleh [[National Committee for a Free Europe]], bagian dari [[Operasi Psikologis (Amerika Serikat)|Operasi Psikologis]] besar-besaran semasa [[Perang Dingin]]. RL didirikan dua tahun kemudian dan kedua organisasi ini bersatu pada tahun 1976.
