Audi A8 (''Typ'' 4D) muncul ke publik bulan Maret 1994 pada ajang Geneva Auto Show, dengan produksinya mulai bulan Juni 1994. Tidak sama seperti pendahulunya [[Audi V8]], A8 dibangun dari [[Volkswagen Group D platform#D2|platform D2 Volkswagen]] yang baru, [[monokok]] [[aluminium]] ({{nowrap|"Audi Space Frame"}}), sehingga mengurangi bobot kendaraan dan menjaga kekakuan struktur. [[Sedan]]nya ditawarkan dalam 2 versi yaitu standar dan jarak sumbu roda panjang (A8 L). A8 L menambah ruang kaki belakang sebesar {{convert|5|in|0}}. Audi memperkenalkan S8 4.2 quattro di Eropa tahun 1996. Di pasar Inggris, S8 hanya tersedia dalam transmisi otomatis.
