Hetmanate ini didirikan oleh Hetman dari Zaporizhian Host Zaporizhia Bohdan Khmelnystky pada masa pergolakan 1648-57. 

Setelah [[Ivan Mazepa]] gagal memisahkan diri dari Rusia di 1708, seluruh daerah digabungkan dala  Pemerintahan Kiev<ref name="constitution-garant">{{Cite web|url=http://constitution.garant.ru/history/act1600-1918/2005/|title=Decree on the establishment of provinces and cities of rospisanii (Google translation)|publisher=Garant-Service|accessdate=2011-10-03}}</ref> dan otonomi CossackKazaki secara signifikan dibatasi. [[Yekaterina II dari Rusia|Catherine II dari Rusia]] secara resmi menghapus  lembaga Hetman pada 1764 dan di 1764-1781 CossackHetmanat HetmanateKazaki digabungkan dalam Pemerintahan Russia Kecil yang  dipimpin oleh Pyotr Rumyantsev.
