Pada tanggal 18 Desember 2017, Jonghyun ditemukan tak sadarkan diri di sebuah apartemen sewaan di Cheongdam-dong, sebelah selatan Seoul sekitar pukul 18.10 [[Waktu Standar Korea|KST]], menurut polisi. Sebelumnya, kakak perempuannya menelepon ke petugas darurat pada pukul 16.42, dan melaporkan bahwa dia percaya bahwa saudaranya akan mencoba bunuh diri.
