Madras (Chennai) memiliki salah satu bandara pertama di India dan merupakan tujuan akhir dari [[Air India]] 's penerbangan pertama dari Bombay ([[Mumbai]]) melalui [[Belgaum]] pada tahun 1954.<ref name="AirCustomsChennai_History"/> Bandara ini dibangun di atas tanah yang disumbangkan oleh mantan gubernur Presidensi Madras, [[L. Sriramulu Naidu]]. Meskipun pesawat pertama "Pushmoth" mendarat di Bandara Chennai pada 1932, penggunaan tersebut terbatas pada operasi militer sampai selama Perang Dunia ke 2.
