Judul album ini adalah bentuk feminin nongramatikal dari kata Latin yang artinya "penggali". Album ini sebagian terinspirasi oleh kematian ibu Björk pada 2018, Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir, terutama lagu "Sorrowful Soil" dan "Ancestress". Lagu-lagu itu ditulis selama dan setelah ''lockdown'' [[COVID-19]], saat Björk pulang ke Islandia, dan mengatakan bahwa ia tak pernah "berada di rumah sebanyak itu sejak saya berusia 16 tahun."
