Go Ara yang lebih sering dipanggil Go Ah Ra lahir di [[Jinju]], [[Gyeongsang Selatan]], [[Korea Selatan]]. Saat muda, dia terus berpindah-pindah di Korea karena ayahnya adalah seorang prajurit. Ketika masih di SMP, dia direkomendasikan oleh teman untuk audisi di [[SM Entertainment]]. Saat tahun 2003, ia menjadi pemenang SM Entertainment Teen Model Contest. Setelah bergabung dengan [[SM Entertainment]], ia mulai berlatih dengan peserta pelatihan lainnya di bawah perusahaan yang sama di bidang akting, menyanyi, dan menari.

Ara telah terpilih untuk pemeran utama wanita, Lee Ok-lim, pada tahun 2003 drama remaja [[KBS]] drama remaja, Sharp # 1, berakting bersama Lee Eun-song, Kim Si-hoo, dan Yoo Ah-in. Pada tahun 2005, dia sekali lagi memilih untuk Reprise perannya sebagai Lee di sekuel ''Sharp #1'', ''Sharp #2'', kali ini dibintangi bersama anggota [[Super Junior]] [[Kim Kibum]] dan [[Kim Heechul]], baik satu label dengan Ara, serta Lee Eun-song.
 
Kinerja terobosan Ara adalah tahun 2006 [[SBS]] drama, ''Snow Flower'', di manadimana ia membintangi bersama [[Kim Kibum]], [[Kim Hee-ae]], dan [[Lee Jae-ryong]]. Karakter Go itu, Yoo Da-mi, adalah memberontak dan ambisius, memenangkan penghargaan penting di dunia akting penghargaan tahun berikutnya.
 
Dua tahun kemudian, ia dilempar ke 2008 MBC ''Who Are You?'' di mana ia berakting bersama [[Yoon Kye-sang]]. Drama ini menarik penggemar internasional serta menciptakan basis penggemar ganda.
