Dinamai setelah Griffin Street, [[Surry Hills]], Griffin Theatre Company dibentuk tahun 1978 oleh lulusan [[National Institute of Dramatic Art]]. Pindah ke Stables Theatre tahun 1979 dan bergabung tahun 1980.

[[Cate Blanchett]] dan [[Jacqueline McKenzie]] memulai karirkarier profesional mereka di Griffin. Film ''[[Lantana (film)|Lantana]]'', ''[[The Boys (film 1998)|The Boys]]'', dan ''[[Heartbreak Kid]]'' (yang kemudian berubah menjadi serial televisi ''[[Heartbreak High]]'') didasarkan pada drama hasil produksi Griffin.
