'''''Archelon''''' (Dari bahasa Yunani yang berarti pemimpin para penyu), adalah [[penyu]] laut prasejarah yang telah lama punah. Archelon merupakan penyu terbesar yang pernah didokumentasikan. Spesimen archelon pertama kali ditemukan di formasi geologis Pierre Shale, Dakota Selatan, [[Amerika Serikat]] oleh Dr. G.R. Wieland pada tahun 1895 dan berhasil dideskripsikan pada tahun berikutnya.
Pada tahun 1970an, fosil Archelon terbesar ditemukan di lokasi yang sama. Fosil itu berukuran panjang lebih empat meter dan lebar dari sirip satu ke sirip lain mencapai hingga 4.87 meter.
Kerabat paling dekat Archelon dengan penyu modern adalah dengan penyu belimbing.

Tidak seperti penyu yang masih hidup
Pada fosil yang dipamerkan di Museum Sejarah Nasional [[Wina]], diperkirakan bahwa spesimen tersebut mati di saat sedang tidur musim dingin di dasar lautan. Spesimen ini juga menunjukkan usia asli penyu tersebut yang mencapai lebih dari seratus tahun.
