Pires telah mempersembahkan gelar Piala Dunia 1998, Euro 2000 dan Piala Konfederasi, bersama timnas Prancis. Terakhir kali ia bermain untuk timnas Prancis yakni pada tahun 2004.
Di level klub, Pires menikmati kesuksesan bersama Arsenal antara tahun 2000 hingga 2006. Pires juga turut meraih tiga gelar Piala FA, dua gelar Premier League, dan menjadi bagian saat Arsenal tidak terkalahkan pada musim 2003-2004.
Satu trofi yang tidak berhasil diraihnya adalah trofi Liga Champions, yang mana The Gunners harus mengakui kekalahan dari Barcelona pada tahun 2006. Pertandingan tersebut juga menjadi kali terakhir baginya berseragam Arsenal sebelum melanjutkan kariernya bersama Villarreal.
Saat itu Pires diganti di awal babak pertama setelah kiper Jens Lehmann mendapat kartu merah dalam laga final tersebut.
Pada bulan Februari 2016, Pires memutuskan pensiun setelah dilepas oleh klub India Super League, Goa, pada bulan Maret 2015
