Renault Clio diperkenalkan ke publik pada [[Paris Motor Show]] di bulan Juni 1990 lalu dijual di [[PerancisPrancis]] dan daratan Eropa lainnya. Produk ini baru dijual di pasar [[Inggris]] bulan Maret tahun 1991. Renault Clio diposisikan untuk menggantikan [[Renault 5]] (yang masih dijual sampai 1996). Terdapat beberapa tipe mesin bensin dan diesel yang diluncurkan. Untuk mesin bensin, tersedia mesin 1.2L dan 1.4L 4 silinder segaris dan 1.7L dan 1.9L mesin diesel. Generasi kedua dari Renault Clio diluncurkan tahun 1998 dan dijual kurang dari US$10.000. Modelnya lebih membulat dari model sebelumnya yang masih cenderung mengotak. Mesin yang tersedia pun beragam dari bensin dan diesel. Mesin bensinnya tersedia versi 1.2L, 1.4L, dan 1.6L dan 1.9L untuk versi dieselnya. Renault juga meluncurkan mesin terbaru 2.0L 16-valve tahun 1998 dengan tenaga 172dk (124kW124&nbsp;kW) yang bisa dipacu sampai kecepatan 220 &nbsp;km/jam. Versi teratas dari Renault Clio adalah Clio V6 Sport, yang dibekali mesin V6 dengan tenaga 230 PS (170kW170&nbsp;kW). Kecepatan maksimumnya mencapai 235 &nbsp;km/jam.
