De Luca telah mengoleksi buku-buku komik sejak usia muda dan menggemari komik fiksi ilmiah antara lain ''Star Trek.''  Tahun  1996, De Luca, menyatakan diri sebagai "Trekkie", yang kemudian didekati oleh produser [[Brannon Braga]]  dan  [[Ronald D.
