Model sebelumnya adalah seri 700, si [[BMW New Class\|"New Class"]], si [[BMW New Six\|"New Six" 2500/2800/Bavaria]] dan si [[BMW New Six#Coupes\|CS]]. Seri 5 hadir untuk mengganti si tua New Six sedans. Bodi dirancang oleh [[Marcello Gandini]], berbasis pada BMW Garmisch 2002ti [[Bertone]] yang muncul saat Geneva Show 1970.
