Nama panggilan juga biasanya ditulis dalam aksara [[Kanji]] meskipun tidak selalu. Ada juga orang Jepang yang menggunakan huruf hiragana atau katakana saja untuk nama panggilannya. Suatu tulisan kanji dari sebuah nama dapat memiliki beberapa kemungkinan [[pengucapan]]. Nama Jepang biasanya juga mempunyai marga seperti halnya [[nama Tionghoa]].
