Mulder adalah tokoh yang mempercayai keberadaan alien dan dunia paranormal. Sedangkan Scully, sebagai ilmuwan berlatar belakang medis, dipasangkan dengan Mulder oleh pihak tertentu untuk menghentikan pekerjaan Mulder. Akan tetapi, seiring waktu berjalan, mereka membina hubungan persahabatan yang erat. Scully yang awalnya tidak menerima hal-hal yang tidak dapat dibuktikan secara ilmiah, lama kelamaan membuka pikirannya.
