''South Dakota'' dijadikan sasaran tembakan meriam dan torpedo dari sebagian kapal-kapal armada Jepang, termasuk dari ''Kirishima'' mulai pukul 00.00 tanggal 15 November. Walaupun sempat beberapa kali mengenai ''Kirishima'', ''South Dakota'' dihantam 25 amunisi ukuran sedang dan satu amunisi ukuran besar. Walaupun beberapa di antaranya tidak meledak, serangan mengakibatkan lumpuhnya sistem komunikasi dan sistem kendali persenjataan yang tersisa.
