Menurut [[seismolog]], gempa bumi tersebut merupakan bagian dari rangkaian tiga peristiwa besar, termasuk gempa bumi [[Gempa bumi Miyagi 2011|April 2011]] dan Februari 2021. Episentrum gempa bumi 2022 hanya berjarak sekitar 7 km ke arah barat daya dari gempa 2021. Gempa 2021 pecah ke arah selatan dengan patahan sepanjang 45 km, sedangkan gempa 2022 pecah ke arah utara dengan patahan sepanjang dua kali lebih besar dari sebelumnya. Kedua gempa tersebut dikategorikan sebagai [[gempa bumi ganda]] karena lokasi yang berdekatan, waktu kejadian, dan besaran gempa.
