[[Bret Hart]] menang WWF Championship di Summerslam pada Agustus 1997. [[Bret Hart]] yang tampil di WWF sejak tahun 1984 berkhianat untuk menanda tangani kontrak ke WCW (kini bagian dari WWE) di awal Desember 1997. McMahon berusaha mencegah Hart meninggalkan perusahaan sebagai juara, tapi Hart tidak mau kehilangan gelar dari Heart Break Kid (julukan Shawn Michaels) yang memiliki perseteruan baik di luar maupun di dalam ring di Survivor Series di negara asalnya.
