''Shōkaku'' dan kapal induk kembarannya [[Kapal induk Jepang Zuikaku|''Zuikaku'']], menyusun [[Divisi Induk Ke-5]], dan memperoleh pesawat-pesawat terbangnya beberapa saat sebelum penyerangan Pearl Harbor dan siap tempur tepat pada waktunya.
