Berbeda dengan grup musik Korea Utara lainnya, seluruh anggota Moranbong Band hanya beranggotakan perempuan.<ref name="Masculine state 2013"/> Berbeda dengan girl band [[Korea Selatan]], anggota Moranbong Band memainkan alat musik mereka sendiri. Karena pendidikan musik Korea Utara mendambakan presisi dan akurasi, kemampuan bermain mereka digambarkan sebagai "sangat berprestasi dan ketat".<ref name="TudorPearson2015"/> Banyaknya jumlah anggota memungkinkan mereka memainkan berbagai gaya musik yang berbeda serta beberapa aransemen yang secara teknis menantang. Perubahan dalam lineup tidak mengubah gaya musik band, menunjukkan bahwa anggotanya ditukar karena kemampuan teknis mereka daripada masukan artistik.
