Otis Elevator Company didirikan di [[Yonkers, New York]] pada tahun 1853 oleh Elisha Otis. Saat Elisha meninggal pada tahun 1861, anaknya, Charles dan Norton membentuk kemitraan dan melanjutkan bisnis ini. Selama [[Perang Saudara Amerika Serikat]], elevator Otis cukup diminati karena banyaknya pengiriman bahan perang. Perusahaan di seantero Amerika Serikat pun membeli elevator dari Otis. Pada tahun 1864, setelah resmi bermitra dengan J.M. Alvord, perusahaan ini diubah namanya menjadi Otis Brothers & Co.
Pada tahun 1925, elevator otomatis penuh pertama di dunia, Collective Control, resmi diperkenalkan.
