Armada awalnya adalah 5 pesawat [[Boeing 707]] bekas [[Lufthansa]], menggantikan [[Boeing 707|Boeing 720]] yang digunakan Air Rhodesia. Air Zimbabwe pada masa ini juga mengoperasikan [[Vickers Viscount]]. Pertengahan 1980-an, maskapai ini membeli 3 pesawat [[Boeing 737|Boeing 737-200]] dari [[Boeing]] untuk melayani rute domestik dan internasional jarak pendek. [[Boeing 707]] akhirnya dipensiunkan tahun 1990 dan digantikan 2 pesawat [[Boeing 767|Boeing 767-200ER]], yang dioptimalkan untuk penerbangan internasional jarak jauh, terutama ke [[London]]. Maskapai ini juga sempat mengoperasikan 1 pesawat [[British Aerospace 146|BAe-146]] bekas AU Zimbabwe, namun akhirnya dikeluarkan dari dinas. maskapai ini juga sempat menyewa pesawat [[Fokker 50]], namun juga dikeluarkan dari dinas karena tidak sesuai dengan kondisi iklim Zimbabwe yang panas.
 
Tahun 2005, maskapai ini menyewa 2 pesawat [[Xian MA60|Xian MA-60]] dari [[China]] dan 1 pesawat MA-60 lain yang disumbangkan China kepada maskapai ini tahun 2006 yang digunakan untuk rute domestik dan regional. Tahun itu juga, maskapai ini mengumumkan akan memesan 5 pesawat [[Ilyushin Il-96]] dari Rusia untuk menggantikan Boeing 767, namun dibatalkan.
 
Tahun 2003, maskapai ini dilaporkan mengalami masalah keuangan. Tahun 2006, dilaporkan pula bahwa maskapai ini mengalami penurunan jumlah penumpang, dari 1 juta pada tahun 1999 menjadi 230,000 pada tahun 2005. Kapten Pilot Oscar Madombwe, CEO maskapai saat itu, menyalahkan situasi politik negeri itu, cerita-cerita buruk (''hoax'') mengenai maskapai ini, yang sering kali tidak terbukti, kekurangan devisa negara, kesulitan perlengkapan pendukung serta bahan bakar.<ref>[http://www.mg.co.za/articlePage.aspx?articleid=268839&area=/breaking_news/breaking_news__business Passenger numbers falling– Mail & Guardian] 7 April 2006</ref> Ketika Zimbabwe terkena krisis hiperinflasi (inflasi sangat tinggi) sebesar 1,000% pada tahun 2006, harga tiket maskapai ini naik drastis (200% untuk domestik dan 500% untuk internasional). Air Zimbabwe menambah frekuensi penerbangan ke London Gatwick pada bulan Oktober 2007 menjadi 5 kali seminggu. Ini dikarenakan [[British Airways]], salah satu maskapai lain yang melayani rute London - Harare, menyatakan tidak akan terbang lagi ke Harare karena kekurangan bahan bakar di Zimbabwe.
 
Dikabarkan bahwa Air Zimbabwe sedang mengadakan pembicaraan dengan [[Airbus]] untuk meremajakan armadanya, terutama armada jarak jauh.
