Kelsey, ''An Outline of Greek and Roman Mythology'', 30</ref> Sajak-sajak epik dan genelaogis menciptakan kisah-kisah yang bercerita seputar pahlawan atau peristiwa tertentu, serta memunculkan hubungan antara para pahlawan dari cerita yang berbeda-beda; ceitacerita-cerita itu kemudian disusun secara berurutan. Menurut Ken Dowden, "bahkan ada efek saga: kita dapat mengikuti cerita beberapa keluarga dalam generasi-generasi yang saling berurutan".<ref name="Dowden11"/>
 
Setelah munculnya kultus pemujaan terhadap para pahlawan, maka dewa dan pahlawan disembah dan dipuja bersama-sama dalam ritual yang sakral. Dewa dan pahlawan juga disebut bersama-sama dalam doa dan ikrar yang dialamatkan pada mereka.<ref name="Raffan-Barket205" /> Berlawanan dengan zaman para dewa, pada zaman pahlawan jumlah para pahlawan tidak dibatasi dan tidak ada daftar tetapnya. Pada masa ini, tidak ada lagi dewa besar yang dilahirkan, tetapi pahlawan-pahlawan baru selalu ada saja yang muncul. Perbedaan lainnya antara kultus pemujaan pahlawan dan dewa adalah bahwa pahlawan menjadi pusat dari identitas kelompok lokal.<ref name="Raffan-Barket205">;Raffan-Burkert, ''Greek Religion'', 206</ref>
