Turnamen ini adalah turnamen kedua yang memiliki fase grup yang diikuti 8 pemenang dari babak kedua yang dibagi ke dalam 2 grup, juara masing-masing grup kemudian bertemu di babak final. Sebagai tambahan, babak pendahuluan juga diadakan pada turnamen ini karena turnamen ini merupakan Piala Eropa pertama setelah runtuhnya [[Uni Soviet]] dan [[Yugoslavia]] yang mengakibatkan munculnya banyak negara baru yang dapat mengirimkan wakilnya untuk berkompetisi pada turnamen ini.
Turnamen dimenangkan oleh [[Olympique de Marseille|Marseille]], mengalahkan [[A.C. Milan|Milan]] di [[Final Liga Champions UEFA 1993|final]], menjadi yang pertama dan pada 20232024 satu-satunya tim Prancis yang memenangkan Piala Eropa/Liga Champions.
Namun, segera setelah kemenangan Marseille, tuduhan [[skandal penyuapan sepak bola Prancis|pengaturan pertandingan]] ditujukan kepada mereka dan presiden mereka [[Bernard Tapie]].
