Rene Descartes sering disebut sebagai bapak filsafat modern. Rene Descartes lahir di La Haye Touraine-Prancis dari sebuah keluarga borjuis. Ayah Descartes adalah ketua Parlemen Inggris dan memiliki tanah yang cukup luas (borjuis). Ketika ayah Descartes meninggal dan menerima warisan ayahnya, ia menjual tanah warisan itu, dan menginvestasikan uangnya dengan pendapatan enam atau tujuh ribu franc per tahun. Dia bersekolah di Universitas Jesuit di La Fleche dari tahun 1604-1612, yang tampaknya telah memberikan dasar-dasar matematika modern walaupun sebenarnya pendidikan itu bidang hukum. Pada tahun 1612, dia pergi ke Paris, namun kehidupan sosial di sana dia anggap membosankan, dan kemudian dia mengasingkan diri ke daerah terpencil di Prancis untuk menekuni Geometri, nama daerah terpencil itu Faubourg. Descartes, kadang dipanggil "Penemu Filsafat Modern" dan "Bapak Matematika Modern", adalah salah satu pemikir paling penting dan berpengaruh dalam sejarah barat modern. Dia menginspirasi generasi filsuf kontemporer dan setelahnya, membawa mereka untuk membentuk apa yang sekarang kita kenal sebagai [[rasionalisme kontinental]], sebuah posisi filosofikal pada Eropa abad ke-17 dan 18.

René Descartes lahir pada tanggal 31 Maret 1596 di [[Touraine]]. Ia merupakan anak ketiga dan ayahnya merupakan seorang anggota dewan di Parlemen Brittany. Descartes menempuh pendidikan tinggi di [[perguruan tinggi]] bernama La Fleche yang didirikan oleh raja [[Henri IV dari Prancis]] dan dikelola oleh pendeta [[Yesuit]]. Karya filsafat Descrates dapat dipahami dalam bingkai konteks pemikiran pada masanya, yakni adanya pertentangan antara scholasticism dengan keilmuan baru galilean-copernican. Atas dasar tersebut ia dengan misi filsafatnya berusaha mendapatkan pengetahuan yang tidak dapat diragukan. Metodenya ialah dengan meragukan semua pengetahuan yang ada, yang kemudian mengantarkannya pada kesimpulan bahwa pengetahuan yang ia kategorikan ke dalam tiga bagian dapat diragukan.
1.Pengetahuan yang berasal dari pengalaman inderawi dapat diragukan, semisal kita memasukkan kayu lurus ke dalam air maka akan tampak bengkok.
2.Fakta umum tentang dunia
semisal api itu panas dan benda yang berat akan jatuh juga dapat diragukan. Descrates menyatakan bagaimana jika kita mengalami mimpi yang sama berkali-kali dan dari situ kita mendapatkan pengetahuan umum tersebut
3.Logika dan Matematika
prinsip-prinsip logika dan matematika juga ia ragukan. Ia menyatakan bagaimana jika ada suatu makhluk yang berkuasa memasukkan ilusi dalam pikiran kita, dengan kata lain kita berada dalam suatu matriks.
Dari keraguan tersebut, Descrates hendak mencari pengetahuan apa yang tidak dapat diragukan. Yang akhirnya mengantarkan pada premisnya ''Cogito Ergo Sum'' (aku berpikir maka aku ada). Baginya eksistensi pikiran manusia adalah sesuatu yang absolut dan tidak dapat diragukan. Sebab meskipun pemikirannya tentang sesuatu salah, pikirannya tertipu oleh suatu matriks, ia ragu akan segalanya, tidak dapat diragukan lagi bahwa pikiran itu sendiri eksis/ada.
