Ikon dapat dibuat melalui cara dibentuk dalam bentuk metal, diukir di batu, dijahit di kain, dilukis di kayu, dibuat dalam bentuk [[mosaik]] atau karya fresko, dicetak di kertas atau metal, dll. Ikon ~~seringkali~~sering kali diiluminasi dengan lilin atau tempat minyak. Iluminasi gambar-gambar keagamaan dengan lampu atau lilin adalah praktik kuno pra-Kristen. Gambar-gambar komparabel dari Gereja Barat umumnya tidak disebut sebagai "ikon", meskipun "ikonik" digunakan untuk menyebutkan gaya statis dari gambar devosional. Ikon bukanlah sama seperti gambar pada umumnya, karena Ikon adalah “Firman yang ditulis dalam gambar”. Tidak sembarang orang bisa membuat atau mengerjakan sebuah ikon, kecuali mereka mempunyai keahlian atau kemampuan khusus dalam membuatnya. Ada pula langkah-langkah khusus dalam menulis Ikon, Yaitu seperti Harus berpuasa serta mengucapkan doa dan mazmur saat ketika melukis atau mengerjakan sebuah ikon.
