Monster gila hidup di gurun dan gersang di bagian barat daya Amerika Serikat dan Utara Meksiko.

Manusia memiliki hormon incretin, salah satu dari hormon tersebut adalah hormon GLP-1 (Glucagon Like Peptide-1) yang bisa untuk mengatur kadar gula darah normal, sehingga baik untuk penderita diabetes tipe 2. Namun, GLP-1 ini akan langsung didegradasi oleh enzim tubuh juga yang bernama DPP-IV (Dipeptidyl peptidase-IV), sehingga efek dari GLP-1 hanya sebentar dan harus diberi secara intravena dari luar. Oleh karena itu, dibutuhkan zat yang serupa sifatnya dengan GLP-1 tetapi tahan dengan degradasi DPP-IV. Zat tersebut ditemukan dari saliva (air liur) Monster Gila ini. salah satu produk dari saliva Mosnter Gila ini adalah Exenatide.
