Kebanyakan rekornya datang saat bertugas di Front Timur, sementara 9 sisanya dari Front Barat, yang 8 di antaranya menggunakan [[pesawat tempur]] jet [[Messerschmitt Me 262]] yang teknologinya sangat maju saat itu.
 
Ia sempat dipenjarakan akibat dikambinghitamkan atas tenggelamnya Kapalkapal Tripitz{{ship|kapal tempur Jerman|Tirpitz||2}} yang harusnya ia bela dari serangan musuh.{{sfn|Toliver|Constable|1996|p=311}} Namun, kemudian namanya dibersihkan dan ditugaskan kembali.
