Meskipun secara geografis dan linguistik mereka yang disebut sebagai orang Asia Tenggara, dominasi dan pengaruh yang lama dari orang-orang [[bangsa Han\|Tionghoa]] telah membuat mereka secara budaya lebih dekat dengan orang-orang Asia Timur, atau secara lebih spesifik tetangga-tetangga mereka yang terdekat di sebelah utara, yaitu suku-suku bangsa di [[Tiongkok Selatan]] dan suku-suku lainnya yang berada di sekitar [[Tiongkok Selatan]]. Orang Viet cukup berbeda dari kelompok lain di Asia Tenggara. Ini mungkin karena orang Viet lebih dekat dengan [[orang Han]] asal Tiongkok. Maka itu, [[budaya Viet]] juga lebih mirip budaya Asia Timur dibanding budaya di Asia Tenggara. == Asal usul == Baris 146 ⟶ 145: == Penyebaran == ~~Orang~~Etnis ~~Viet~~Vietnam aslinya berasal dari ~~utara~~ Vietnam utara dan ~~selatan~~ Tiongkok selatan. Dalam tempo beberapa abad kelompok ini telah menaklukkan banyak wilayah yang dulunya merupakan ~~punya~~kepunyaan [[Kerajaan [[Champa]] dan [[Kekaisaran Khmer]]. ~~Orang Viet~~Mereka merupakan kelompok ~~etnik~~etnis yang dominan di kebanyakan provinsi Vietnam, dan jumlahnya cukup besar di [[Kamboja]]. Di bawah [[Khmer ~~Merah~~Rouge]] di Kamboja, mereka adalah kelompok yang paling dianiaya. Puluhan ribu orang dibunuh dalam sebuah pembantaian yang diorganisir rezim itu. Kebanyakan dari mereka yang berhasil selamat melarikan diri ke ~~negara~~ Vietnam. Pada [[abad ke-16]], beberapa orang ~~Viet~~Vietnam bermigrasi ke [[Thailand]] dan Tiongkok. Di Tiongkok, meskipun mereka lebih terpengaruh budaya ~~Tionghoa~~Tiongkok, keturunan mereka masih dapat berbahasa ~~Viet~~Vietnam dan membentuk ~~kelompok~~ [[~~orang~~suku Gin]] di Tiongkok. Mereka termasuk kelompok-kelompok minoritas yang diakui di Republik Rakyat Tiongkok yang khususnya tinggal di atau di sekitar [[Provinsi Guangxi]]. Ketika [[Prancis]] meninggalkan Vietnam pada [[1954]], sejumlah orang ~~Viet~~Vietnam bermigrasi ke Prancis. Namun,, di Prancis sudah ada sejumlah ~~orang~~etnis ~~Viet~~Vietnam yang menetap atau belajar di Prancis sejak setidak-tidaknya akhir [[Perang Dunia I]]. Sebagai akibat dari pembagian [[Vietnam Utara]] dan [[Vietnam Selatan]], hampir satu juta orang ~~Viet~~Vietnam bermigrasi dari utara ke selatan untuk melarikan diri dari penganiayaan yang sesungguhnya ataupun yang hanya diduga akan terjadi. Sementara itu, sekelompok orang selatan dalam jumlah yang jauh lebih kecil bergabung dengan pihak utara. Akhir [[Perang Vietnam]] mendorong banyak orang lainnya untuk meninggalkan negara itu. Banyak yang kemudian menetap di [[Amerika Utara]], [[Eropa Barat]] dan [[Australia]].
