Vedder lahir dengan nama '''Edward Louis Severson III'''. Nama tersebut sempat berganti menjadi Edward Mueller ketika ibunya, Karen Lee Vedder menikah dengan Peter Mueller pada saat dirinya berumur kurang dari dua tahun. Eddie Mueller tidak pernah tahu ayah biologisnya, Edward Louis Severson Jr., sampai beranjak remaja ketika ibunya bercerai dengan Peter Mueller. Eddie lantas mengganti nama keluarganya dengan "Vedder", merujuk pada nama ibunya.

 

 

Setelah Bad Radio bubar pada 1990, Eddie menerima kaset rekaman berisi demo dari mantan drummer [[Red Hot Chili Peppers]], [[Jack Irons]]. Rekaman demo tersebut dikirim oleh [[Stone Gossard]], [[Mike McCready]] dan [[Jeff Ament]] yang tengah mencari seorang vokalis. Eddie menulis syair dan menyanyikan tiga buah lagu yang diberi tajuk "[[Mamasan Trilogy]]" berdasarkan musik yang digubah oleh Gossard.
