Penny Lane dirilis Februari 1967 dalam bentuk singel bersama [[Strawberry Fields Forever]], dan selanjutnya keduanya dimasukkan ke dalam album [[Magical Mystery Tour]] yang dirilis pada tahun 1967. Lagu ini sebagian besar digubah oleh McCartney pada saat perekaman album [[Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band]].
Produser Beatles, [[George Martin]], mengklaim Penny Lane dan Strawberry Fields Forever sebagai salah satu singel terbaik oleh The Beatles.
== Asal mula judul lagu ==

Penny Lane berasal dari nama jalan di dekat rumah John Lennon pada waktu masih anak-anak. Nama jalan tersebut diambil dari seorang pedagang budak abad 18, [[James Penny]]. Papan penunjuk jalan ini sering menjadi sasaran pencurian oleh fans, sehingga namanya sering dicat langsung ke salah satu bangunan di sana. Namun mulai tahun 2007, penunjuk jalan yang dirancang sulit dicuri mulai digunakan.
McCartney dan Lennon sering bertemu di daerah persimpangan Penny Lane di daerah [[Wavertree]] untuk selanjutnya menumpang bis ke pusat kota. Area di sekitar tempat tersebut yang merupakan persimpangan dengan Smithdown Road, Smithdown Place dan Allerton Road juga dianggap sebagai Penny Lane. Pada masa itu, Penny Lane menjadi pemberhentian bagi banyak rute bus, dan memang tertulis di beberapa bus sebagai daerah tujuan Penny Lane.
== Interpretasi ==
Lirik Penny Lane menggambarkan pengalaman visual McCartney secara psikadelik di daerah Penny Lane. Paul McCartney sedang duduk di halte bus menunggu John Lennon untuk menemuinya di Penny Lane, sebuah jalan dekat rumah mereka. Sementara duduk di sana Paul mencatat hal-hal yang dia lihat, termasuk toko tukang cukur, dengan foto langganannya dan perawat menjual bunga poppies untuk [[Remembrance Day]] (hari peringatan berakhirnya perang dunia) pada ([[11]] [[November]].
McCartney kemudian menggubah ini menjadi dalam lagu yang dikenal sekarang, dengan penggambaran yang ambigu dan surealis. Misalnya langit yang biru cerah di musim panas (''"beneath the blue suburban skies"''), sekaligus juga hujan (''"the fireman rushes in from the pouring rain"'', sekaligus mendekati musim dingin (''"selling poppies from a tray"'', yang berhubungan dengan peringatan [[Remembrance Day]]. Karena itulah karya ini dikaitkan oleh [[Ian MacDonalds]] dengan pengalaman McCartney dengan LSD untuk pertama kali pada 1966.
