Ooi dikonversi menjadi torpedo cruiser pada tanggal 25 Agustus 1941. Saat Perang Pasifik pecah, ia menjadi escort dari Combined Fleet. Ia juga terlibat dalam Perang Midway. Setelah itu, ia dikonversi lagi menjadi kapal transport cepat pada Agustus 1942 bersamaan dengan Kitakami. Ooi juga terlibat dalam operasi di Laut India. Ooi akhirnya tenggelam pada tanggal 19 Juli 1944.▼
