Pada saat [[Perang Pasifik]] pecah, ia ditugaskandimasukkan padake dalam 3rdArmada SpecialSerbu AttackSpesial Forceke-3 yang bertugas menginvasi Filipina. Pada 31 Desember, ia harus direpairdiperbaiki akibat terkena mine[[ranjau laut]] hingga Agustus 1942. Kemudian ia terlibat dalam beberapa konvoi escortsebagai pengawal, termasuk diantaranya mengawal ''{{ship|Kapal tempur Jepang|Yamato||2}}'' dan ''{{ship|Kapal tempur Jepang|Musashi||2}}''. Tanggal 22 Oktober 1944., [[Pertempuran Teluk Leyte]] pun dimulai. Pada saat itu Yamagumo tergabung dalam armada yang dipimpin oleh Admiral Shouji Nishimura (dikenal dengan NishimuraArmada KantaiNishimura). Bersama Fusou''{{ship|Kapal tempur Jepang|Fusō||2}}'', ''{{ship|Kapal tempur Jepang|Yamashiro||2}}'', ''{{ship|Kapal penjelajah Jepang|Mogami|1934|2}}'', ''{{ship|Kapal perusak Jepang|Michishio||2}}'', ''{{ship|Kapal perusak Jepang|Asagumo|1937|2}}'', dan ''{{ship|Kapal perusak Jepang|Shigure|1935|2}}'', Yamagumo berangkat dari Brunei. Sesampainya di Selat Surigao pada dinihari 25 Oktober 1944, mereka disambut oleh USArmada 7thPendukung Fleetke-7 Supportmilik Force[[Amerika Serikat]]. Terjadi pertempuran dikenal dengan nama BattlePertempuran ofSelat Surigao Strait. Pertempuran ini lebih tepat digambarkan sebagai pembantaian. Yamagumo sendiri tenggelam setelah ditorpedo oleh {{USS |McDermut|DD-677|6}}. Dari pertempuran tersebut hanya Shigure yang berhasil selamat.
