Pada Januari 2018, Airbus mengatakan bahwa mereka sedang menganalisis suatu varian A321LR dengan peningkatan daya tampung maksimal namun memiliki kapasitas yang lebih rendah sehingga memungkinkan untuk terbang hampir sejauh {{cvt|5,000|nmi|km|abbr=}}. Pesawat varian ini dapat bersaing dengan lebih baik terhadap Boeing NMA. A321XLR dengan jarak jelajah ditambah menjadi {{cvt|4,500|nmi|km|abbr=}} akan diluncurkan pada tahun 2019 dan mulai beroperasi pada 2021 atau 2022.
