Amun naik ke posisi [[Penunggu|dewa penunggu]] Thebes setelah akhir [[Periode Menengah Pertama Mesir|Periode Menengah Pertama]], di bawah [[Dinasti kesebelas Mesir|Dinasti ke-11]]. Sebagai pelindung Thebes, istrinya adalah Mut. Di Thebes, Amun sebagai ayah, Mut sebagai ibu dan dewa Bulan Khonsu membentuk keluarga dewa atau "Theban Triad".
