Meski kelompok ini sebelumnya dianggap mencakup semua hewan yang sekarang dimasukkan kedalam kelas [[Cubozoa]] dan [[Staurozoa]], sekarang mereka hanya mencakup hewan dari tiga ordo yang masih hidup (dua diantaranya ada didalam subkelas Scyphozoa, Discomedusae).<ref name="Daly">Daly, Brugler, Cartwright, Collins, Dawson, Fautin, France, McFadden, Opresko, Rodriguez, Romano & Stake (2007).
