Sonko menerima gelar sarjana pada tahun 1993, dan lulus dengan gelar master dalam Ilmu Yuridis dari [[Universitas Gaston Berger]] di [[Saint-Louis, Senegal|Saint-Louis]] pada tahun 1999.
