Contoh gempa bumi ini menunjukkan bahwa perhitungan kerugian untuk hipotetis kemungkinan gempa bumi di masa depan dapat diandalkan. Pada tahun 2005, perkiraan jumlah korban jiwa akibat skenario hipotetis gempa bumi dekat [[Kathmandu]] sebesar M8.1 dipublikasikan. Korban jiwa pada saat itu diperkirakan antara 21.000 dan 42.000. Gempa M7.8 tanggal 25 April 2015 menewaskan sekitar 8.900 orang, karena terjadi pada hari Sabtu dan banyak bangunan yang runtuh, seperti gedung sekolah dan kota, kosong sehingga mengurangi jumlah korban jiwa.
