Pada 1990-an, diisukan bahwa Maria mungkin merupakan adipati wanita agung yang sisa-sisa jenazahnya hilang dari pemakaman keluarga Romanov yang ditemukan di dekat [[Yekaterinburg]], [[Rusia]] dan digali pada 1991.
