Genus ini merupakan anggota famili [[Colchicaceae]] yang berasal dari Asia Barat, Eropa, bagian dari pantai Mediterania, menyusuri pantai Afrika Timur ke Afrika Selatan dan Western Cape. Dalam genus ini ovarium bunganya berada di bawah tanah, akibatnya gaya menjadi sangat panjang dalam proporsi, seringkali lebih dari 10  cm.
