== Sejarah ==
JR East didirikan pada [[1 April]] [[1987]] setelah dipecah dari [[Kereta Api Nasional Jepang|Japanese National Railways]] (JNR) milik pemerintah. Meskipun proses tersebut disebut "swastanisasi", JR East sebenarnya merupakan anak perusahaan penuh sebuah [[BUMN]] pemerintah, [[JNR Settlement Corporation]] selama beberapa tahun hingga akhirnya terjual sepenuhnya kepada publik pada tahun 2002. Setelah JNR dipecah, JR East ditugaskan untuk mengambil alih tanggung jawab pengoperasian bekas jalur-jalur JNR di wilayah [[Tokyo Raya]], [[wilayah Tohoku|Tohoku]] dan wilayah sekitarnya, termasuk jalur Shinkansen yang mengarah kearah utara Tokyo.
