== Sejarah ==
Garam telah digunakan sejak zaman purba kala. Manusia pemburu pada zaman purba kala mengisi kembali garam yang mereka butuhkan dengan memakan daging hewan. Beberapa bangsa yang sumber makanan utamanya hewan umumnya tidak menggunakan garam lagi karena kandungan garam pada [[daging]] yang sudah cukup. Namun bangsa yang bergantung pada agrikultur menggunakan garam dalam kehidupannya.
 
Garam memiliki pengaruh yang sangat besar pada sejarah; seperti menjadi sebuah alat tukar, sumber dari sebuah revolusi, dan lain-lain.
 
Beberapa pemerintahan menaruh pajak yang sangat besar pada penjualan garam, contohnya adalah pemerintahan [[Tiongkok]]. Garam juga digunakan oleh pedagang [[Yunani]] untuk membeli seorang [[budak]]. Para golongan pekerja juga dulunya dibayar menggunakan garam. Garam memilki dampak yang sangat tinggi, bahkan terjadi kehebohan ketika garam dipajak secara paksa oleh [[Prancis]].
